Description

V3.0

28.8.2007

first public release

This effect shows the recording date and time that is stored by DV-cameras on a DV-tape.

Effect Display

The effect provide following displays

  • analog clock
color of hands and background can be select. The background and the timepoints can be removed. This allows you to use your own clock design as background. THis display could be usefull for documentations or sport events. The analog clock shows the recording time.
  • digital clock (font)
shows a digital clock using any windows font. The type of display can be selected in a wide variety

    digital clock (LED 7-segment)
shows a digital clock simulating an LED 7-segment diplay. The type of display can be selected in a wide variety

Usage

Unfortunately Liquid does not support the reading of the recording datecode from a DV-recording.

Therefore the process is a bit more complicated and some prerequisites have to be fullfilled, to allow the plugin to work correctly.

The plugin is reading the DV-datecode directly from the DV-AVI-file. Therefore it has to know where the AVI-files are stored. It needs to too in which AVI-file each clip on the timeline is located and where in the AVI-file.

This information is not provided to the plugin by Liquid, so I had to find another solution.

As you may know, Liquid is able to export at timeline as a so called EDL-file (Edit-Decision-List). This is a textfile that can be read by several professional systems and allows the reconstruction of a timeline (more or less).

You generate an EDL file by going to the menu:

FILE -> Export into-File -> EDL

Following window opens:

The picture shows the “Sony 9100” EDL-type. You have to use this one.

In the EDL you see that the timeline consits of 4 clips (column “block”). The reelname starts with “V0001-” and “V0003-”. R-VTR-IN gives you the start timecode of the clip on the timeline and R-VTR OUT the end timecode.

P-VTR IN gives us the start timecode of the clip in the source AVI-file and P-VTR OUT the end timecode.

As you can see, we have all information we need, but also one problem:

The timecode are in the file, but from the reelname only the first 6 characters are available. Therefore it is mandatory that all reelnames have a unique start. I am numbering all reels starting with V0001-name, V0002-name, etc. You can chose a schema you want, but the the first 6 Characters of each reelname have to be unique. Otherwise it is not possible to differentiate between the different reels.

Now you have to save the EDL-file. The EDL-file has to be saved in a directory and filename specified in the configuration file dvdatecode.dat. The default is: “EDLFILE=c:\liquid_edl\test.edl”. You may change the directory and filename to what you want in the configuration file.

Click on the “SAVE”-icon and save the EDL under the filename “c:\liquid_edl\test.edl”.

When you have set the correct MEDIAV-file reel directory in the configuration file you are set. Otherwise please check the configuration file. The default is:

MEDIAAV=E:\MediaAV\Reels

You may change the drive and directory to whatever you want. The directory specified here has to contain the reel folders of Liquid.

Everytime the timeline is changed  you have to export an updated EDL-file. You overwrite always the same filename.

Please be aware that the EDL-file is common for all timelines and projects.

Remark: Studio is not exporting such an EDL-file, that is why the plugin is not working in Studio.

Installation

  • Save both files - dvdatecode.fex and dvdatecode.dat in the folder “..\Avid\Avid Liquid 7\PlugIns\RTFx\timecodefx”

  • After launching Liquid Edition/Studio , you’ll see in the effectlist a new categorie “TimecodeFX”. In the effects list you will find the effect “DvDatecode”.

Before applying the effect export the timeline as EDL as described above. If you did not export the correct timeline the plugin may show an error message or - that is worse - an incorrect datecode, as it may be pointed to a wrong file or a wrong location in the file.

HDV-Datecode

HDV-files contain a datecode like the DV-datecode. Unfortunatley I did not find any information in the web where this information is stored in the HDV-files. (If you find any information about this please contact me)

But maybe there is a workaround possible:

All HDV cameras can create a DV-video from the HDV-video. This DV-video may contain the datecode

( I cannot test this as I donot have a HDV-camera yet).

If you place the DV-video file into the same directory as the HDV-video file, the plugin will pick up the datecode from the DV-file. I think this is worth testing.
